Can I Use My Credit Cards in Vietnam?

by Mary

Can I use my credit cards in Vietnam?

I heard that credit cards aren't always accepted in Vietnam. I just wanna use my Visa or Mastercard because I feel safer and I also get reward miles.

I almost never carry money with me anymore. The credit card is all I carry at home but I know it can't be the same in Vietnam.

Any advice?

Most credit cards are accepted in Vietnam. VISA and MASTERCARD are the most widely accepted. JCB and AMERICAN EXPRESS are also accepted in some outlets.

Not all hotels, commercial centers, shops and restaurants accept credit cards though.

Check with the sales staff before you spend any plastic money. Sometimes they just aren't in the mood to accept a credit card even if they are fully equipped to do so. Cash is King.

And don't forget the surcharges. Here is a list of charges you'll pay at the outlet in Vietnam. Check with your bank before you leave about overseas transaction fees that they will surely charge on top of that.

  • Visa and Mastercard: 2.2 % surcharge

  • JCB: 2.75% surcharge

  • American Express: 4% surcharge

All the best.
