Job Hunting in Ho Chi Minh City

by Poi

Hi Philip!

I am planning to teach in Ho Chi Minh this year.
Just wondering, once I go around and look for a teaching job in the city, do I need to bring a cover letter with me? Well, aside from the CV. And to whom do you usually address your cover letter? Is it to the school principal or hiring manager? Thanks in advance!

Find out the name of the school principle if you can. They are always impressed when you take the time to find out about the school, especially the man who is going to hire you.

Definitely bring a cover letter and always find a name to address it to. They get all happy if you make them think that they are well-known. Talk about him and the school the entire time when you drop your resume at the school. You will get the job, unless you are unable to speak well or you are so drunk that you smell like a bar.

I hope Saigon works out for you but the real opportunities are moving North to Danang. I have a friend teaching English in a small school in a sleepy village town a few hours from Danang. He has no qualifications, yet he started at $18 an hour.

But he is American. Filipinos usually don't do as well, yet they are preferred over the Vietnamese teachers.

Take care.
