Recommended Schools in Saigon?

by Jacquelyn Turner
(HCMC)

I just moved to HCMC 5 days ago for the purpose of teaching English for a year. I just graduated from University of Miami with a Major in Communication Studies and Economics and I also completed my TEFL certificate in May of this year.

I only have 20 hours of teaching experience and want to find a good job in Saigon. One of my friends works at V.U.S. but I'm not sure I want to teach there after reading your advice .... which was extremely helpful so thank you!

Where do you recommend I apply and what type of salary should I bargain for considering my degree yet minimal teaching experience.

HCMC has definitely been a culture shock despite having traveling in SE Asia before. There are many things I like and don't like but I plan on staying for a year and can't wait to travel around! I do however plan to dedicate a lot of my time to teaching. Please let me know what you think and thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks for your kind words. Your question is a very hard one to answer because it is highly subjective. Based on your experience (Which is the most important and most scrutinized part of your resume when looking for work in HCMC) you'll not have many great offers and even if you bargain for a higher wage, the important part is the amount of hours the school is willing to start you with.

Your lack of experience is a detriment. You need to get experience.

I can't be certain which school will be willing to offer you the best opportunity. How well you do in a Demonstration class will most likely determine how many hours and how much money they'll be willing to offer you.

Even if you get hired, you won't be offered more than 10-15 hours a week at first. If you excel in the first term then the amount of hours will go up and your experience will grow, giving you the option of being more selective about where YOU want to teach.

Try Elite and estudy.vn because a friend of mine with very little experience is working at both places. estudy.vn is a children's school that is server based learning and Elite is for adults who only have time for night classes.

20 hours a week at estudy.vn and 10 hours a week at Elite is very possible and will net you $2,500USD a month.
