Aug 21, Otres Beach Destroyed

Otres Beach update as of August 20th / 2010.

Click the link to Otres Beach if you are not familiar with it.

It seems that the final few holdouts of restaurants, bars and guesthouses have finally been evicted from the most pristine beach in all of Cambodia.

The shore line was once pleasantly lined with ex-pat owned establishments that once served the ever growing volume of backpackers and budget travelers to Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

The government came in with bulldozers and leveled a reported 52 restaurants, bars and guesthouses.

They are making room for a tourist-targeted theme Park. Sounds ... unappealing.

It is the Government's land to do as they see fit, yet they are destroying it and changing the last or the disappearing beaches in Sihanoukville.

Singapore is carting sand away from the area in the 1,000s of tons. They have been dredging the sand and taking it to Singapore to enlarge their own beaches.

Watching the beaches recede in Cambodia is sad and a threat to future tourist revenues to Cambodia.

Read about how Singapore is stealing the beaches of its Neighbor's.

Otres Beach isn't immune. It may be a blessing in disguise for the hundreds of families who have lost their livelihoods over this.

Some of the restaurants on Otres beach had been there for for many years, operating under the radar and providing tourists to Cambodia with some spectacular scenery.

Let's hope that the evicted business owners and workers find another way to ply their trade.

I also hope the Cambodia government does well by placing an amusement park on top of such a pristine place as Otres Beach.

I think the Government is calling it an "Ocean-side garden Paradise.

Make no mistake about it. If someone doesn't stop Singapore from doing what they have been doing, there will be no beach for anyone to benefit from.

A few guesthouses and restaurants have survived near Otres Beach. The area is still worth a visit but the noise of construction hurts it.

Good Luck to everyone out on the road.
