Unproffessional Interviews Vietnam
by Jason
(United States)
I had a question.
Is it Vietnamese culture to play a lot of games and toy around with people during the interview process for teaching jobs?

At times, it seems that way but I don't know if I would call it culture. The Vietnamese seem to take great pleasure in making you jump through hoops during the interview process.
Some say they are a power-hungry people that have been taught since birth that they are superior to Western people because they won the Vietnamese - American war.
Just read a newspaper translated and it will make you giggle.
It is written daily about how Vietnam is the most powerful nation. One time I read about the 40th anniversary of Nguyen Van Minh and the date he finalized the flight plans that the Americans used to get to the Moon in 1964.
Or about the parade for the Vietnamese guy who invented the ATM machine 14 years after I was using it!
So, Yes. Some of them believe that they are superior as a people and enjoy treating us like inferiors. Oddly, many people have told me they found the Vietnamese people to be a very prejudiced bunch.
Some want to be made to feel that they are doing you a favor by giving you a job. Butter them up just once in front of their co workers and you'll be in.
Take Care,
Philip
